Role Description
For our Genova and Torino offices we are looking for a Mechatronic 3D Modeler & Drafting who directly integrated in Mechatronics & In-Service Inspection Design Department to collaborate to the Lead Fast Reactor (LFR) mechanical design activities and experimental facilities, focusing-on the mechatronics (mechanical/electrical/automation) design of complex machines, mechanisms, and robotics applications with particular reference, but not limited to, operation in molten lead or extreme environmental conditions.

He/she will be in charge of drafting process schemes, drawings using tools integrated with 3D CAD models for the design and construction phases of small modular nuclear reactors (SMR). She/He will support development of 3D CAD models for systems and services of the Mechatronic of a nuclear power system.


Main Activities

  • Perform mechanical engineering in all project phase closely linked with Mechatronic Engineering team spread in Italy / France / UK.
  • Carry out feasibility studies, conceptual design, basic design, and detailed engineering design. 
  • Cooperate to the preparation of P&IDs, drawings, and documents for tendering.
  • Make preliminary or detailed technical design studies using a 3D computer-aided design (CAD) system and support drafters and engineers’ team in mechatronic development. 
  • Have daily contacts with the design engineers to support the design of the components and systems design.
  • Carrying out assembly and fabrication drawings. 
  • Involve in Mechanical kick-off meetings, review meetings, design meetings and studies. 
  • Perform the execution of design activities for the Mechatronic devices in the field of LFR, in accordance with best engineering practices, also exploring innovative solutions to technical challenges and problems.
  • Participate to the definition of the operative sequence of operations.
  • Take part in development of the design of bespoke components/mechanism, from basic up to detail facing the mechanical, electrical, and automation aspects in integrated way.
  • Contribute to the development of 3D model of Mechatronic devices. 
  • Involve in 3D model internal and external interfaces review within a BIM context and PLM system.
  • Participate to the identification of breakthrough solutions to the most complex engineering challenges with Engineering team.
  • Participate of testing processes and perform testing and validation of new designs.
  • Provide creative solutions in mechanical and equipment design, prepare and update mechanical engineering design manuals, general specifications and standard equipment data sheets. 
  • Participate to the definition of the methodologies for stress analysis of bespoke mechanical components/mechanism according to the applicable construction code by using Finite Element Modelling.
  • Participate of specifications and material requisitions for the supply and manufacturing activity.
  • Contribute to the purchasing technical documentation for mechanical component supply.
  • Follow with Engineering team manufacturers & subcontractor activity and delivery and ensure its conformance with defined design.
  • Verify the technical correctness of the engineering documents produced when the task is delegated by the Line Manager.
  • Contribute to the development and update of newcleo’s General Specifications and standard procedures in the discipline.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
  • Participate & Coordinate assigned work with other technical personnel as directed.
  • Checks and participates to development of internal technical documentation: this task also implies the collection of comments coming from all other Design Units that have technical interfaces with the subject of the supply. 
  • Supports the PM in the technical interface with others technical department, on specific technical topics.
  • Applies the company procedure of Quality, Environmental, Health and Safety System and Organizational Model.

Desired Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechatronics/Mechanical/Automation/Robotics Engineering
  • Engineering Degree Qualified (or Equivalent) is preferred.
  • Fluent Italian and English. French is a plus.
  • Extensive Engineering Workplace Experience (more than 5 years).
  • Experience of engineering aspects related to design, prototyping, fabrication and assembly of bespoke components/mechanism and complex machines (including electrical on-board design and automation aspects).
  • Knowledge about the commercially available components to be part of the bill of materials (e.g. motors, gears, sensors, etc.), with particular reference to extreme environments (high temperature, presence of radiations).
  • Experience in the application of specific codes and standards for lifting equipment (EN 13001, FEM, EURO codes).
  • Knowledge of SolidWorks for 3D/2D Modelling and electrical CAD are also an asset (at least 5 years).
  • Knowledge and/or experience of fabrication aspects, understanding of welding and non-destructive testing topics on complex machines is a plus.
  • Experience in a nuclear or other highly regulated environment and good understanding of safety aspects would be a definite advantage.
  • Extensive knowledge of QA systems and their practical application.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in an Engineering Unit at any industrial mechanical design company or at any mechanical workshop in one or more of the following fields: mechanical components design and manufacturing; manufacturing and assembly of large mechanical components / equipment; design components/mechanism for industrial applications.
  • Nuclear Industry Experience including activities involving following-up of procured products.
