Job Description
We are looking for a Computational Physicist position in the domain of reactor physics and computer simulation of lead-cooled fast reactors. The Computational Physicist will assist the engineering projects related to LFR basic design and safety assessment, focusing on the definition and solution of different multi-physics problems coupling neutral particle transport, equations of state, solid mechanics, and thermal-hydraulics as technical areas of interest. The physicist will work on the computational models of the coupled problems using valid numerical approximations to achieve accurate physical solutions. The R&D group in Codes and Methods supports the development of computer codes, physical correlations and nuclear data, methodologies, and engineering applications for criticality and shielding, reactor design and safety studies. The successful candidate will work jointly with other research staff to apply knowledge, practices and techniques to the existing methodologies used for reactor studies. The group operates in the areas of reactor physics, transport theory and neutronics, reactor thermal-hydraulics and heat transfer, two-phase flow, and instrumentation physics.


Main Activities

  • Definition, setup, and modelling of physical systems
  • Review and improvement of existing algorithms, and development of new numerical schemes to solve mathematical problems reproducing physical systems
  • Perform code verification and validation through benchmarking activities
  • Production of technical documentation and scientific publications
  • Develop and support communities of new computer codes’ users 

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Nuclear Engineering or other Industrial Engineering, Physics. PhD is a plus.
  • Fluent English, with Italian or French as optional languages.
  • Experience in computational modeling of one or more of the technical areas of interest listed above 
  • C/C++ or FORTRAN programming languages.
  • Experience with Linux or posix-compliant operative systems.

  • Knowledge of nuclear engineering principles, theories, and practices for the design and analysis of fast reactor systems
  • Specific expertise in neutronics, or radiation transport, or thermo-hydraulics; thermo-mechanics, fuel performance.
  • Demonstrated background in thermal-hydraulics and heat transfer
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in written and oral scientific communication.
